On October 5th, NIS American students were charged with a task. Their task was to travel back in time and witness the history and purpose of one of the most iconic monuments in the heart of Cairo, the Citadel. Our students stood within the ancient walls of Cairo’s fortress city and imagined the stories of those who came before them. Our young geographers were also asked to look past the history and see what the Citadel means to Egyptians today. We challenged them to observe closely and compare its ancient importance to why it is still important to Egyptians today. Armed with this new appreciation for Cairo’s fortress on the hill, we all left with a deeper connection to the history of this amazing country and a desire to return soon.
